marked 'Fort Stewart' to cover, the account in the name of Alexander Stewart Esq., by Laughlin McNeale [his factor]. The entries in the folio include payments to named individuals for goods and services including enslaved labour. The final page entry is headed '...Mortgage Account with the Slaves Lands &c thereunto belonging to Samual Vaughan and Laughlin McNeale'. [A later note state McNeale died in 1765]. The book has also been used in reverse as a library catalogue, with few entries under each alphabetical letter, Ogston Hall, Derbyshire, Collection of the late Mr Gladwyn Turbutt (1927-2025), Condition Report, Condition Report, A couple of entries are payments for the return of runaways, but others refer to the hire of 'negroe labour' amongst numerous entires for services and commodities. There are no obvious or apparent entries for the purchase or sale of slaves. One entry refers to the hire of a 'free negroe', another for attendance and medicines for labourers.
