全部拍賣 / Sculptures / Large Prehistoric Anasazi / Hohokam Stone Mano

Native American, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) or Hohokam. A long loaf of dense gray stone, worn smooth by generations of grinding, this is a mano ("hand" in Spanish), the upper stone of the paired mano and metate that fed the ancient Southwest. Its unusual length indicates a two-hand mano, gripped at both ends and driven in a reciprocating stroke across a trough metate to reduce maize, seeds, and wild grains to meal. One face carries the flattened, faintly abraded wear of long use; the opposite curve retains the pecked, granular texture of the original cobble. Utilitarian objects of this kind sat at the center of household life in Pueblo and Hohokam villages, where the grinding room and its bins were as much a social space as a working one. Deceptively plain, and shaped almost entirely by labor rather than design. The shift from one-hand to two-hand manos in the American Southwest tracks the intensification of maize agriculture. Longer manos paired with trough metates increased the working surface and the throughput of the grind, and ethnographic and archaeological evidence alike show women working in sequences of bins holding progressively finer abrasive stones, moving the meal from coarse to fine. Estimates drawn from Puebloan contexts suggest hours of daily grinding per household, a labor cost visible in the skeletal record and in the mano itself: the flattened face here is the sum of thousands of strokes.
