A Look at French Street Art

French street art has won over a vast audience owing to its knack for turning urban spaces into open-air art galleries.

While street art originated in New York during the 1960s and 1970s, France took a prominent role in introducing graffiti to Europe from the 1980s onward. Notable figures in the French urban scene, like Jef Aérosol and Blek le Rat, were among the pioneers who brought this art form to Paris, thereby contributing to the emergence of a dynamic urban scene across Europe.

Paris, in particular, has cemented its status as one of the global hubs of urban art, boasting districts that have evolved into iconic landmarks, such as the Marais, Belleville, and the 13th arrondissement. Guided tours are arranged for exploring the artworks adorning the city's walls, and new works regularly appear on every street corner.

The urban scene thrives in Paris to such an extent that certain galleries are exclusively devoted to it, elevating 'graffiti' from a marginal art form to a prominent one. Indeed, urban art has garnered legitimacy, with some artists seamlessly transitioning to contemporary art. Figures like JR (who recently collaborated with the Opéra Garnier), Invader, and Miss Tic have become established artists, with their works frequently showcased in galleries and national museums.

Urban art stands as a distinct art form in its own right, and now, it's more accessible than ever, largely due to auctions. Here are some of the most notable artists working in the field:
